about

A dramatic encounter between an elite group led by Shuya Okino and a legendary drummer.
It connects the past and present of Japanese jazz and illuminates tomorrow as an extension of the past.
This miraculous collaboration was recorded in a studio during a rehearsal with Japanese jazz legend Takeo Moriyama for the Tokyo Crossover/Jazz Festival in November 2021, the first time the festival had been held in seven years. Shuya Okino selected songs from Takeo Moriyama's past albums, of course
"Watarase" (composed by Fumio Itabashi) respected by jazz fans around the world, is included. Shuya Okino also wrote a new song "Father Forest" inspired by Takeo Moriyama’s playing. The motif of the song came about by Shuya Okino imagining "If Fela Kuti and Mr. Moriyama ever performed together...".
Also “Miagetegoran Yoruno Hoshio(Look up at the Stars in the Night)” by Kyu Sakamoto which was featured as an encore at the Tokyo Crossover/Jazz Festival 2021 was re-recorded due to the ardent love of jazz fans (Mr. Moriyama had participated in the backing performance of this song with Kyu Sakamoto).
The album "SUCCESSION" is a comprehensive collection of high-speed dance jazz, funky jazz, afro, free jazz, model jazz, ballads, waltzes, and Japanese folk songs "inheriting" the spirit of jazz from one generation to the next. This album will not only leave its mark on the history of domestically produced jazz but will also be seen overseas as timeless and borderless Japanese music.

KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET Profile
The project was formed in 2015 when Shuya Okino of KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE was asked to collaborate with a Francis Wolff exhibition, a photographer who has shot many record covers for BLUE NOTE, at KYOTOGRAPHIE an international photography festival. In April 2015 the six-member group debuted on BLUE NOTE JAPAN with “MISSION” an album of cover songs from Blue Note Records between 1964 and 1966, with Naruyoshi Kikuchi as a guest on sax.
In the same month the band also performed at KYOTOGRAPHIE and in September of the same year they performed at the 14th Tokyo Jazz Festival.
In June 2017 released their second album "UNITY" featuring Tomoki
Saunders, son of Pharoah Saunders and Navasha Daya, niece of Gil Scott Heron. That same year they also performed at Japan's largest outdoor festival FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL.
In the fall of 2018 tracks from “UNITY” remixed by Ron Trent and Jaxx Madicine were released on the Swedish House label Local Talk. At the same time the band made a cover of Pharoah Sanders' "You've Got To Have Freedom" as a 12" for Record Store Day and in November 2021 they were invited to participate in the Tokyo Crossover/Jazz Festival 2021, which returned after a seven-year absence. In April 2022 they released their third album "SUCCESSION" under the name KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET feat.Takeo Moriyama. They will also perform at BLUE NOTE TOKYO in May and FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL 2022 in July.

Takeo Moriyama Profile
Born in Tokyo in 1945, moved to Koshyu city in Yamanashi Prefecture soon after birth. Enthralled by the live jazz performance he heard in his early childhood, he took an interest in the drums.
After entering Kofu Daiichi High School, he joined the brass band, and took up the drums from his second year.
Entered the prestigious Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Music, Percussion Department.
While in school, began to participate in jazz sessions, and became close friends with Yosuke Yamashita.
In 1969, became the drummer of the newly formed Yosuke Yamashita Trio.
After culminating his distinct form of free jazz, and 3 wildly successful European tours with raving reviews, left the Yosuke Yamashita Trio in 1975.
From 1977, formed his own Takeo Moriyama Quartet. His style returned to modern jazz, characterized by the four beat of hard bop. Performed in not only Japan, but in Germany and Italy as well.
In 2001, received the 35th Jazz Disc Award (Japanese Jazz), 56th ACA National Arts Festival (Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs) Excellence Award for recording category. In 2002, was awarded the 27th Fumio Nanri Award (given to the artist who made the most significant contribution to the development of Japanese jazz).
Published “Swing no Kakushin (Essence of Swing)” in 2017, which self-analyzed his distinctive form of free jazz during his time with the Yosuke Yamashita Trio.
From 2001, has been contributing to the cultural activities in Kani city, Gifu prefecture where he currently resides, by hosting and performing in the annual “Moriyama Jazz Night” at the Kani Public Arts Center (“Ala”).
